How does Baz Luhrmann keep the spirit of Shakespearean theatre alive in his interpretation of Romeo and Juliet?
Romeo and Juliet is one of the plays written by William Shakespeare it is also one of the best. These Elizabethan plays have turned into films and one of the films of Romeo and Juliet was Directed by Baz Luhrmann. Baz Luhrmann has kept the spirit of the Shakespearean theatre alive in his modern day films.
Baz Luhrmann has kept the spirit of the Shakespearean theatre by using different features such as the references to fate he uses these differently but he still keeps the spirit the expectations are really high but he does succeed one of the main way he uses the fate in the film is by using the premonition, it is when Romeo says “He who hath the steerage of my course direct my sail” he spectates himself in the future in the Capulet monument where Juliet is on her death bed. This is a very good effect to make the audience have the same feeling they do about the original play. Another important part is when he showed fate in the film was when the letter was supposed to be delivered to him and he wasn’t in the caravan so when that happened the mail man left the note on the door saying you weren’t in you have to pick it up. since in the play Romeo never got the letter and if he did the whole play would have turned out differently, so to show that he did not get the note on the door saying there was something for him. They made Romeo in the play step on the note because the wind had blow it off before he saw it. This is another major part in the film that keeps the spirit of fate alive in the film. Another coincidence in the film was the bit were the party invitation was on the television were it gave Romeo an idea to go there to see Rosaline because he used to be in love with Rosaline, this is another effect of how Baz Luhrmann kept the spirit up because in the play it was when the servant couldn’t read and then Romeo had to read it for him and he saw Rosaline on the guest list so they decided that they were going to the Party even it was the enemy’s families party.
Another section that Luhrmann uses to also keep the spirit of the Shakespearean theatre alive is by using male actors dressed as female actors. Back in the day it used to be just male actors no female actors, this was because female actors were banned from the theatre in the Elizabethan period of time but Baz Luhrmann has kept the spirit up by making the actor who plays Mercutio in the play was turned into a girl for a short period of time, he was wearing a dress to the party of the Capulets this has kept the spirit up by showing that he cares about the way Shakespeare used to make his plays in his theatres.
Luhrmann also uses religious symbolism to talk about fate and coincidence because in the play, Romeo was always talking about God,fate and fortune and when Romeo killed Tybalt in the play he was shouting about how he had bad fortune, Luhrmann adapted this and in the film when Romeo killed Tybalt it was underneath the statue of Jesus and then everything in the film turn gloomy it started to rain which is pathetic fallacy which is another way he kept the feeling of the Shakespearean theatre alive because of pathetic fallacy it is when the weather changes in the way of the mood of the character. another way he used Religious symbols is by the character of Friar Lawrence because he was supposed to be a priest but his clothing in the film were not good therefore we did not know he was a man of God but when he took of his shirt he had a tattoo of a cross which is symbolized meaning that he was a person of God which resembles the spirit of Shakespeare.
Luhrmann uses dramatic irony as well in the films so he can keep the spiritual feeling of the theatre alive he uses this by making the audience know something that the people in the film do know not and it also works the same in the play and in the film both are when everyone knows the plan that Friar Lawrence and Juliet made up when they plan to make her seem dead when she is actually just sleeping but she looks really pale and she is not breathing so then Romeo can come and find her and then they could live their lives together happily instead of worrying, but Romeo never found out that it was all a plan because the letter had never got to Romeo and then Romeo got so angry because he thought that Juliet was dead and he couldn’t see her so he started defying God and this is all dramatic irony because everyone knows this was just a plan and she wasn’t actually dead but Romeo didn’t know that so this was annoying another thing that leads to this is that Baz Luhrmann has also kept the tragedy part of Romeo and Juliet alive since they both kill them self this is another way he has kept the spirit of the Shakespearean theatre alive these are all really important stuff that make him keep the audience feeling the Elizabethan period.
This all shows how Baz Luhrmann has kept the feeling from the Elizabethan times still going through the modern day films of Romeo and Juliet this is so fascinating when you actually watch the movie but these are all of the ways Luhrmann has kept the feeling of the Shakespearean theatre alive in his films and it also shows that he cares for the Elizabethan play writer Shakespeare and I strongly think that he has done a really excellent job he has kept everything going dramatic irony, pathetic fallacy, fate, coincidence, tragedy, male as females he has it all so you should all know how he has kept the Shakespearean spirit alive now!
