William Shakespeare generates a semantic field referring to the power of fate in his play. He does this using a wide variety of device.
William Shakespeare uses semantic field in Romeo and Juliet, one of the uses of a semantic field is to give an extra layer of information. A critical way he adds a semantic field is by using metaphor, referring to the play Romeo says “He that hath the steerage of my course direct my sail!” The reason why this gives the play an extra layer of meaning is because who would think a human can be a boat, He is believing in fate and says who ever up in heaven is guiding me he will go through that path, therefore Romeo says how unpredictable his life is.
Another way William Shakespeare uses semantic field is by using the coincidence in the play of Romeo and Juliet, The way he does this is in the play he uses Romeo to read a letter to the servant “Seigneur Martino and his wife and daughters;County Anselme and his beauteous sisters; The lady widow of Vitruvio;Seigneur Placentio and his lovely nieces;Mercutio and his brother Valentine;Mine uncle Capulet, his wife and daughters; My fair niece Rosaline and Livia;Seigneur Valentio and his cousin Tybalt;Lucio and the lively Helena.” Suddenly, this gave them the idea to go to the Capulet party in the first place. This leads to the semantic field because someone is guiding him to go to party where he finds his true love and he says that this will lead to his death.
The last feature is the prologue where it all begins. Shakespeare uses the prologue to give a semantic field in the play. Subsequently, he tells us in the prologue that Romeo and Juliet are star crossed lovers but they are in different side of enemy families and if they choose their love with each other they will die. This gives extra layer of information and it gives dramatic irony in the play because the audience know about the consequences of their love and Romeo and Juliet do not.
