In Macbeth, Shakespeare uses different language features, one of which is personification.
Macbeth imagines a dagger guiding him. This is the quote he used. “Thou marshall’st me the way that i was going”
In this stanza Macbeth is saying a soliloquy. One of the key points he said was that “Thou marshall’st me the way i was going” which means “oh you the dagger you are guiding me the way i was already going.” The imaginary dagger is saying go kill Duncan and i will guide on the way. The dagger is being personified because a dagger is leading Macbeth when only living things can guide you to something. Shakespeare uses personification in his play because of the atmosphere and because of the characters emotions. The characters thoughts comes to life like the dagger which he thinks is leading him. This shows us that Macbeth is confused and worried because he doesn’t know whether to kill Duncan or not.
