Glamis, and Thane of Cawdor the greatest is behind. Thanks for your pains
This quote shows that Macbeth is happy and that so far everything the witches have said came true but the greatest one is still to come.
My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man that function is smother’d in surmise, and nothing is, but what is not.
This quote shows the Macbeth’s state of mind is confused and he is thinking about how would he become king but afterwards he says nothing matters now except what is yet to come.
The Prince of Cumberland! that is a step.On which I must fall down, or else o’erleap, For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires:
he eye wink at the hand; yet let that be, Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see
This quote suggests the Macbeth’s mind has gone evil because he is saying how if he wants to be king he has to get past the prince of Cumberland which is Malcolm so he has to do something to make him vanish so he could be next in line to be king.
If it were done when tis done, then twere well it were done quickly. If th’assassination could trammel up the consequence and catch with his surcease
This passage suggests the Macbeth’s Mind is in between killing and not killing Duncan which is called a Equivocator when you do not know which why to go this also means that if he wants to kill Duncan he should get it over with and create less consequences for himself.
Is this a dagger i see before me, the handle towards my hand? come, let me clutch thee: i have not thee not, and yet i see thee still. art thou not fatal vision, sensible to feeling as so sight? Or art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false creation, proceeding from the heat oppressed brain?
This stanza suggests that Macbeth has lost his mind because he is seeing visions of daggers and preaching saying that the dagger is leading him to kill Duncan the way he is already going so it tells me that Macbeth has lost it and has gone crazy.
Scorpion of the mind = In this little verse it just shows how Macbeth’s mind has developed throughout the whole of the play so far he was such a kind and brave person at the beginning and now it is suggesting that his mind is full of scorpions meaning it’s full of poison and he wants to eradicate everyone in his way. He has no more compassion not even for the best of friends.
Which of you have done this!= This shows that when Macbeth ordered the killing on Banquo his friend. He was acting normal saying that Banquo isn’t a good friend for not coming to this celebration with us. He knew that Banquo was dead! Afterwards he asked where should he sit but he saw that every chair was full and the lords and others said there is a space for him and on his seat was the ghost of Banquo and he freaked out he went into a fit his wife said he does it normally but he was feeling the guilt straightaway saying I haven’t done this why do u come haunt me I didn’t kill you. He was going mad at this point and showing his real self. He was losing it!

You’ve made some excellent selections of quotations. I’d encourage you to explore quote 3 a bit more – especially the parts where he speaks of hiding his actions from God and even from his own conscience. Also I think the ‘dagger of the mind’ begs for more analysis. Could it represent what’s wrong with his mind. Is it really there, or does it symbolise his guilt – or his fate?
